Requirement

Well, I recommend you that you should have at least 4 CPU cores and 6GB ram, less will work but I prefer to give 4 cores and 4GB ram to my new Virtual Machine. besides that, if you are using 32bit system then I recommend you to download 32bit ISO file and if you are running 64bit then sounds good, download Debian 9 64bit ISO file. while you have done with all these steps then in next step you have to download and install Vmware Workstation 15 pro in your system, if you don’t have the idea then in below I will guide you how to install it.

In the first step, you need to download and install Vmware Workstation 15 pro, so the installation is quite easy just download the VMware and double click on the setup then follow the below instructions.
1. Welcome to the VMware Workstation Pro setup wizard, Click Next
2. agree to the term and click the Next
3. in Custom setup check to mark the Enhanced Keyboard and click the Next
4. User experience setting click the Next
5. Application Shortcuts preference click the Next
6. finally, click the install button to start the installation
7. So, the Vmware have installed successfully now click the Finish button

Now that you have VMware Workstation 15 Pro in your operating system and it is ready to install Guest Virtual Machine. so now you need to download Debian 9 ISO file from its official website, moreover, you can click the link below to download the ISO file. here we have two ISO file to download it in our system, so get know

Create a New Virtual Machine

I should tell you that for installing any operating system on Virtual Guest Machine, you need to create a new virtual machine for that, then you can install any Guest machine. so here I will walk you through on how to create a new virtual machine, read the below instruction and follow my steps to be a success on creating a virtual machine.

Step 1. in the first step, launch VMware Workstation 15 Pro that you installed earlier.

Step 2. While you opened the Vmware then you will see the below screenshot, in middle of the VMware window you will see the option Create a New Virtual Machine. so, click on it.

Step 3. in the first window you will see the welcome page and in here you have two option so you should select the second option which is Custom (advanced) and click the Next button.

Step 4. choose the Virtual machine hardware compatibility so here read once and leave it as default just click the Next button.

Step 5. so here in Guest operating system installation you will see three options and you have to select the last option which is I will install the operating system later and Click the Next button.

Step 6. to select a guest operating system you have to select Linux OS and for its version choose Debian 9.x 64-bit and click the Next button.

Step 7. in this step, give a proper name to your Virtual Machine as I have written Debian 9.8 and if you want to change its location then click the Browse button and set the path and click the Next button.

Step 8. for processor configuration give 4 processor to this Virtual Machine and click the Next button.

Step 9. in here it will ask you for memory size so, give 4GB memory size to the Virtual Machine and click the Next button.

Step 10. for network type select the second option which is use network address translation and click the Next button.

Step 11. Now select LSI Logic for input and output controller type and click the Next button.

Step 12. in here select the second option for a Disk type and click the Next button.

Step 13. in this step, you have three option which is all about disk so you have to select the first option which is about Create a New Virtual Disk and click the Next button.

Step 14. Well, for Disk Capacity I recommend you to give 20GB and select Store virtual disk as a single file and click the Next button.

Step 15. in here specify the disk file like where you want to store the disk file, as I will leave it as default and I recommend you to leave it to default and click the Next button.

Step 16. now it is the time to customize hardware so for that, click the Customize hardware and insert the Debian 9 ISO file.

Step 17. in customizing hardware only you need to insert the Debian 9.8.0 ISO file that you downloaded earlier. to insert ISO file follow the below five steps.
1. Select CD/DVD
2. Select the Use ISO image file
3. browse the iso file from your computer
4. select the iso file and open it
5. Now Close the window

Step 18. Ok, now you have created a new Virtual Machine successfully and you have inserted Debian 9.8 ISO file too. so, the Virtual Machine is ready to install Debian 9.8. in the last step click the Finish button.

Now your Virtual Machine is fully ready to install Debian 9.8, so to install the Guest Operating system you need to select the Debian 9.8 Guest Operating System from the left side of the window and click on the Power on this virtual machine from the right side of the window. and after that follow the below steps.

Step 1. in the first step, you will see the options so if you want to install the Debian 9.8 with Graphic then select Graphic Install and press Enter key.

Step 2. in here select a language that you want to be used for the installation process. as I have selected the English language, while you have selected your language then click the Continue button.

Step 3. Then, select the country where you live because it will set the time zone and after that, click the Continue button.

Step 4. while you selected your country then it will ask you to select the country for keymap to use and for configuring the keyboard. then click the Continue button.

Step 5. so after waiting for a few seconds then it will ask you to provide your hostname as I have typed techbland, and click the Continue button.

Step 7. after providing your hostname then it will tell you to type your Domain name if you have then type there if you don’t have then leave it blank and click the Continue button.

Step 8. now type a strong password and re-enter the password and click the Continue button.

Step 9. in this step, set up the user and password, the username should start with lowercase and it should be the user real name, so once you have typed your user account name then it will ask you to confirm the user name if it is ok then click the Continue button. then in the next page, it will ask you to provide user account password, so type the password and click the Continue button.

Step 10. after clicking the Continue button then you will see the process bar, afterward, it will ask you to configure the clock by choosing the below option. and click the Continue button.

Step 11. In here you will do the partition disk, the below screenshot that you can see so, leave these four steps to default and click the Continue button.

Step 12. it is asking, that should we write the changes so of course, you have to select Yes option and click the Continue button.

Step 14. ok, in here you have to select on NO option and click on Continue button.

Step 15. so, here select any country for Mirror network just select one of them and click the Continue button.

Step 16. in this step, just leave it to default and click on the Continue button.

Step 17. after that, it will ask you to provide the HTTP proxy information, but if you leave it blank again it is ok, So leave it blank and click the Continue button.

Step 18. Well, if you want to participate in the package usage survey then press Yes but I recommend you to select NO option and click the Continue button.

Step 19. in this step, if you want to install a system which is shown below so just mark them and click the Continue button.

Note: if you see this screenshot with lots of system name then I should tell you that, mark the below system.

Step 20. as you know this system is a new installation on this computer or Guest machine, so it should be safe to install the GRUB boot loader to the master boot record of your first hard drive. so for that, select Yes option and click Continue button.

Step 21. to install the GRUB boot loader on a hard drive you have to select the last option which is /dev/sda and click Continue button.

Step 22. Ok, Debian user here you can see that our installation is completed successfully, so now it will ask you to boot into your new system and make sure that you have to remove the installation media. so, the last step is to click the Continue button.

Install Debian 9 on Virtualbox on Windows 10?

Ok, dear now we reach to install Debian 9 on Virtualbox on windows, as I am using Windows 10 so that’s why I will guide you on windows 10 but if you are using any other operating system or any other version then there is not a big deal you can apply the same step on your OS. well, before installing Debian you need two things, the first one is that you have to install Virtualbox on your windows if you don’t know how to install Virtualbox then follow the article. next thing you need to download the Debian ISO file, here I will show you from where you can download the iso file for Debian.

Step 1. Install Oracle Virtualbox on your System.

First of all, you have to download and install Virtualbox on your windows, so here I have already uploaded an article about how to install Oracle Virtualbox on Windows 7/8/10. you can go through this link, otherwise, if you have an idea about how to install Virtualbox then it’s a piece of good news. so click that link below and install Virtualbox, while you installed Virtualbox then you need to install Virtualbox Extension Pack. Step 2. Download Debian ISO file

So now you have Virtualbox on your windows and your Virtualbox Guest machine is ready to install Debian 9. for installing Debian 9 you have to download its ISO file, so here I will let you know that from where you can download it’s ISO file easily. well, simply click on the link below and download the iso file.

if your internet is too fast then download this ISO file Debian 9.8

Step 3. Create A new Virtual Machine

Here you will need to create a new Virtual Machine for any Operating System, so for Debian 9.8, you need to create a new Virtual machine. below I will guide you on how to create a new Virtual machine, follow the steps.

#1. Open Virtualbox.

#2. for creating new VM you need to click on New button.

#3. if you didn’t see this screenshot then I want to make you sure that click on Expert Mode then you will have such a screenshot. in this step follow the below instructions.
1. type proper name for Debian VM.
2. while you provided the name then you will get automatically its type and version, if not then follow the below screenshot.
3. for memory size select 2048 MB but the recommended size is 1028 MB.
4. we will create a new hard disk for VM to use it’s a filesystem, so leave it as a default.
5. click on Create button.
#4. in this step follow the below instructions.
1. select file location for Debian 9.8 but the default location is fine just leave it as default.
2. you can see the default file size is 8GB but since we will select Dynamically allocated then the default size will be much less than 8GB. the Dynamically allocated virtual hard disk file depends on the actual size of the filesystem installed in it. as we add software to VM and as running software create log files and the other data on VM then the filesystem size will grow. so, select 10GB because 8GB will not install Debian on Virtualbox it will give an error.
3. select the hard disk file type and as default, it is VDI so leave it as default.
4. for storage on physical hard disk select dynamically allocated which is the default.
5. while you did this all steps then click on create button.
Now you can see that we have Debian 9.8 Virtual Machine available in Virtualbox and it is in the Powered Off state.

Step 4. Configure the New Virtual Machine

While your VM was created successfully then you need to configure the new Virtual machine with few steps. if you don’t know then don’t worry here follow my steps.

#1. Select Debian 9.8 VM from the left side of the VirtualBox window after that, click on the Settings on Virtualbox menu bar.

#2. in General option go to advanced option and select Bidirectional for shared clipboard and Drag’n’Drop.

#3. after that, go to System option and go to Processor then increase the size of CPU from 1 to 2.

#4. ok, now its time to insert Debian ISO file so for that go to Storage and click on Empty option and then click on small CD icon, while you clicked on CD icon then click on the first option. then select the ISO file you downloaded earlier.

#5. in the last step go to Network option and in Attached to option select Bridged Adapter and click on OK button.

Step 5. Install Debian 9.8 on Virtualbox

So, now everything is ready to install Debian 9.8 on new Virtual machine, although our Virtual machine is ready and we have configured it too so there is not remaining any step. for installing Debian follow the below steps and focus on each step in order to not face difficulties.

#1. open Virtualbox and select Debian Virtual Machine from the left side of the Virtualbox window and click on Start icon on Virtualbox menu bar.

#2. while you start the installation then you will see the below screenshot on your window so here select Graphical Install after that, press on the Enter button from your keyboard.

#3. then in here choose the language to be used for the installation process so my one is by default it is English and it is Ok.

#4. Select your location in order to set your time zone.

#5. while you selected your location then in the next step it will ask you to select the keyboard layout, so select any country you want.

#6. wait for few minutes and you will see the below screenshot and here it will ask you to provide your hostname.

#7. after that you typed your hostname then it will ask you for the domain name if you have so type there, even you can type your website name too but if you don’t have so don’t worry just click on Continue Button.

#8. now setup user password, for that provides user password and re-confirm password then click on Continue button.

#9. you have provided your password then now it will ask you to provide user full name, so type your full name on the blank input field.

#10. while you continue to next step then it will ask you for account username if your account name is fine then simply click on Continue button.

#11. it will ask you for user password one time more so provide a strong password and re-enter the password and Continue for the next step.

#12. now configure the clock time, select your time zone as my one is Eastern.

#13. in this step select the first option which is Guided-use entire disk and goes ahead.

#14. in the next step again leave it as default and click on continue button.

#15. after that, it will ask you for disk partition then again leave it as default and click on continue button.

#16. this screen is the last dist partition option so click on Finish partition and writes changes to the disk.

#17. if you want to bring changes to disk partition then here it will ask you whether Yes or No but you have to select Yes option and click on continue button.

#18. it is installing the base system of Debian on Virtualbox so you need to wait for a few minutes.

#19. in this step select on the first option and continue.

If you are at home then you may skip this step but if you are outside of your home then you have to fill it. Go to your network administrator and ask for the proxy settings here

#20. in this step wait for some minutes because it is configuring apt and installing software. so, it will take 10 to 15 minutes.

#21. select the first option which is by default No and click on continue button.

#22. here it will ask you for software selection, so select that software which you see in the screenshot and click on Continue button.

Wait for some minutes to complete the installation because it is retrieving 1414 files, due to that it will take some minutes. although it depends on your internet speed if your internet is too fast then it will be done in a few minutes.

#23. after that it will ask you for installing GRUB boot loader so select Yes option and continue.

#24. in here select the last option and continue.

#25. Ok, dear finally the installation is complete so now click on Continue button for login.
